The Haveman Media Empire will need to hire a new President after I retire. Where would you take the company and why? What would you do with our various media enterprises to ensure their future success?

In today’s society, the economy is global. Any plans I have for the company would involve growing our market share internationally in additional to increases we should expect to receive in our domestic business ventures. The same approach can be taken with our various media enterprises to ensure their future success. I believe if we were to remain solely domestic, we are leaving business on the metaphorical table, that would otherwise be had by one of our competitors. Which I also believe would result in our company struggling to compete in a segment of the market in which we once performed very well.
I would ensure the company continues to operate with online global and local articles, but I’d also like to change with the times and do things that set us apart from other media company’s. Something that engages the audience, draws them in and excites them. Interests them. One example of this is the Daily Newsminer, which has a weekly event where they drive around and take a picture of a driver’s licence plate. They then publish it and if the driver see it and contacts them, they win a cash amount.
An idea for us that is different, is if we participated in a weekly scavenger hunt with the final spot being a prize. We could publish clues in our paper and then do an article on the person who finds the prize.
I understand Robert’s desire to keep things family-owned and not go public. I think in the future we need to work on a strong mission statement for our company. I would like to see us focus more on passion projects, ones that will improve our world, even if it means we won’t make as much money as our competitors. We need to make it clear to our readers and viewers exactly what our company stands for. Society is rapidly evolving and we need to be at the forefront of change while being transparent and genuine in our endeavors. Those traits will make us stand apart from our competition, and they will also happen to help us sleep better at night.
I would ensure that we keep what we stand for and know us for but also spread the company more. When spreading the company we need to make sure we have written standards and ways of doing things for the company so that all throughout the various enterprises we remain consistent.
Caitlyn, You made a great point. By having sound rules and regulations, a company and the people in it can know where they stand at all times and where they are going in the future.
For any business to succeed, written standards and regulations are definitely a must. Consistency is another factor which is necessary and can have a huge impact- negative or positive depending on what kind of consistency is present.
As an executive, I would prioritize ethical, responsible media. It is time to stop chasing the weekly news cycle and start covering things accurately. I would put an emphasis and technological development and new sources of income. The internet is a very useful tool and utilizing it to draw in new readers would be a pillar to our future success. New avenues must be taken to expand our brand. This may include social media advertising or paying to have top search on google.
Yes and yes! Accurate and honest. So important. We want our company to have a good name. Only honesty will keep us together in the long haul.
As a President, I would like to ensure that we work towards an ethical and responsible media that reaches people nationally and globally. As technology has developed, distance has become a thing of the past. We can now bring people together digitally. By using this formate, we can expand our reach and gather those who wish to share their ideas and experiences with others.
Rhonda,
I like that you are thinking outside the box and wanting to go global and national. I also agree that we can use technology to reach more people!
If I were to become the next President of the Haveman Media Empire, I would look to grow and expand the company in a healthy way that would promote and highlight the excellence of The Haveman Chronicles. Playing to the global side of society in a firm marketing strategy will all for the company to grow further. I do believe that with the right leadership, this business can sky rocket into a world company.
I agree! Leadership is very important. A business can only be successful if it has a strong leader. 🙂
The Haveman Media Empire would need to have global media relations to stay current with modern times and have wider opportunities to reach as many individuals as possible. Keeping up to date with the times ensures younger generations are secured as long-term viewers to support the company’s economic growth. Ensuring that the media enterprises remained organized and maintained would allow profitable media marketing. Keeping tabs and a close eye on every aspect of the Empire would be crucial for success over the years. Incorporating new internet trends and advancements into the company’s skill set would be a goal of mine. But with any new changes, I would ensure to keep the integrity and positive reputation of the Empire.
If I were the next President at Haveman Media Empire, I would continue to grow with however today’s society is reading/viewing media. If that means going purely online, then that would be something I would merge into. I would strive to remain honest and transparent with our advertising and our stories to remain credible.
Credibility is so important here especially if we are going fully online because you need that trust to keep people interested and favoring your media over other types. Good points you have there.
I would work on expanding the company to become a global voice in entertainment and news media. Smaller media entities are slowly being bought out and consumed by larger companies. I would work to help Haveman avoid this fate and become it’s own widespread network. Developing each independent branch of our company separately in order to fulfill the consumer’s wants and needs in every medium. Throughout these expansions, honesty and integrity will be the cornerstones of our company’s growth.
Kellen,
What you have to say about going global makes sense, and it is a good precaution to ensure that your company is NOT bought out by a larger corporation. Working on internal development is a good way to make sure that you have a strong foundation for your company that will last when you go against the other news outlets out on the market. nice post.
You make very valid points here. Too many small local companies are being bought out, which is a shame. There are quite a few, like me, who likes to read and watch both large global news companies, and the smaller local ones. I like having local news which tells me what is going on around me specifically. But, that seems to be going towards a phase of dying out, sadly. Your idea’s on preventing this, is a good start!
I would make sure that the company is simply reporting the fact of the matter. Delivering unbiased information is all the more important in the online nature of today’s news. People are bombarded daily with massive amounts of info and you can find articles that saw white is black and black is white. This flood of disinformation which is product of agendas being pushed and unprincipled reporting. This has resulted in the public’s mistrust of the media. To restore that trust in our company, I would make sure the company is holding true to “just the facts†in all areas of operation.
I agree that maintaining an objective reporting stance is both vital and attractive in today’s polarized world. Especially the stark lines drawn regarding the 2 party political system in our country. There is hardly a news story that isn’t spun to be on one “side” or the other. It is sad and exhausting and reduces all of us to black and white thinking. I find it dehumanizing and though this stand will be challenging, I’d love to see your paper succeed at just “telling the story” with integrity and let/encourage people to critically think for themselves.
I would ensure that the company would want to expand to promote the Haveman Chronicles by going global. Media is taking over the world, and if that means that the Empire needs to go remotely online, we will do so. The media can benefit us because it is cost-effective with digital marketing methods and with people interacting online, it will increase the brand by building our business’ reputation. We will be able to use social media and the internet to advertise our company to draw readers in.
I think it’s important that we continue to give our readers the latest and most relevant news with accurate information regarding our community as well as what is going on in the world today. With all modern technology has to offer, I would look into distributing our newspaper across multiple platforms (print, website, and mobile) so that we can reach people nationwide and even internationally. I think it’s imperative that we set ourselves apart from other media companies and make sure that we stand out. In order to ensure the future success of our various media enterprises we would focus on consistency, honesty, and credibility so that we can continue to grow.
As president, my primary goal would be updated, accurate and relevant coverage. Finding our ‘niche’ or area of interest where we are best suited and qualified to work and report on will also be important to me, and the market is already saturated with redundant information or even false news. Finding out if our audience is more local/national/global would also be important to me, so that we don’t waste time/money/resources on fruitless endeavors. I would make sure that we are constantly evolving, and have a specific team focus on maintaining the future of the company so that we do not plateau in our efforts to report/commercialize our content.
I like your ideas here. I agree that it’s becoming more and more realized that these big global news entities are not remaining unbiased and the trust viewers have with them is declining. Which is why your goal in providing updated, accurate, and relevant news is important. Your point to monitor your progression and not plateau is impressive!
I’m a little torn about the future for this newspaper. While I see the importance of global interaction today, I also appreciate the absolute necessity of a local paper to fill the need and be driven by the interests of the community. I would take the time personally and as a staff to clarify our own focus/mission statement and get the feedback of the community. I think this could be done by creating avenues of participation – either community events, an online game, or surveys. The results of these will give important clues and guidance for our future as a paper and how to best represent our niche audience. With that firmly in place, it would be good to also consider how to connect the community authentically to the rest of world.
I also feel that local companies are important and would want to remain as a locally focused news station which covers large national and global news. There are already so many global and national stations that there isn’t a huge need to become another one. But with the smaller local stations dying and being sold out, there is a need to keep providing local news which is relevant to the local community.
I would really take a look at what is working well in the company and what can or be changed. What I mostly would want to focus on is unbiased news reporting. Truly unbiased reporting because I feel like that has severely changed over many years. There always seems to be an agenda for one side or another and that would be my main priority.
I would also want to stay up to date on what readers are most interested in. Stay current and vibrant in today’s world. I would want to get to online platforms to try and reach as many readers as possible, while also staying in print as well because I think that is important.
The fictional media empire The Haveman, has always been run by someone in the ‘family’ since its founding in 1833. The founder, Albert Haveman, started this company out as a newspaper and proceeded to expand it by capitalizing on all available media mediums, e.g., dime novels and magazines. Later in 1895 Albert, “handed the reins of his self-made empire to his sone Edward Haveman†who shared his fathers business mentality and proceeded to expand the company though all possible media mediums. Like any smart business man or woman Edward took advantage of the ‘changing of times’ and quickly found that film was going to be the future, which lead to the companys launch of the Haveman Motion Picture Company. After that, radio became the new fad and money maker, which lead to the Haveman Broadcasting Company. Then, about twelve years later, ‘the television’ was invented and Edward started the HBC-TV, the television division of the Haveman Media Empire. In 1952, Edward died from a massive stroke, leaving control of the company to his daughter Margaret. Television was exploding! After that, there was a video-game boom. Margaret was unsure of how video games fit into the structure of the Haveman Media Empire and watched as the industry skyrocketed without her. This was the first time the company did not develop with a new media medium. Then came the internet. She wrestled with the challenges of convergence in the 1990s and how each one of the Haveman Media divisions should merge with the internet. In 2009, nearly 600 magazines closed and the magazine, radio and newspaper divisions were all hurting from lost advertising revenue and shrinking audiences. That year she resigned, handing the company over to her eldest daughter and son-in-law, James and Harriet. James wanted to go public while Harriet absolutely refused to go public. They both resigned and left control to thier son Robert. Now, over 180 years old, the Haveman Chronicle is the oldest family-owned newspaper still in existence. Robert is committed to keeping the company family-owned and has said “he will let the company go bankrupt before he lets it go public.
If I were to take over the company I would one-hundred percent take the company public. It’s what Albert would have done. The founder of this fictional company always capitalized on the changing times and the new mediums that it brought. I would create our own website dedicated to journalism, and with the company’s history I think it would be as big as The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal. I would get our film team started on creating content that other company’s like Netflix or Hulu would broadcast and shy away from the cable network as I think that is a slowly dying industry and our time and resources could be spent elsewhere. Since most people read the news on the internet nowadays, that is where I could spend most of the company’s resources and hopefully take the paper global.
I appreciate how you brought the back story into your answer. It gave more of understanding behind the questions asked. Now the question remains how could one be certain this is what Albert would do? Your plan is fantastic I will give you that but how do you expect to keep the original face value of the company. After all people have been committed to it because it was family owned and operated. With the family out of the picture would you be able to guarantee the success of the plan. While nothing in life is a guarantee the risk must out way the cost.
I would keep on trying to be ahead of the times. If we went electronically we could even have monitor tables installed with educational games that could be installed at McDonald’s kid room’s coffee shops and restaurants that can be eaten on and have multiple screens open at the same time to flood with things to see or just turn into a normal table with different looks available. It is best to get with the times and see more avenues to make money in advertising if you could make money on it so can others. We patent the monitor add table and sell the concept so then it will be cheaper to get them everywhere by having others do the work for us, but have the restriction that our chronicle app is on the system for good reliable information, staying connected.
I think the biggest investment that should be made while new ownership comes in is helping grow the business nationally and getting your name on products. Marketing your business can be crucial to it either growing at a good rate, or declining. If only a few percentage of the population know about a product, how do you expect it to grow? Continuing to get influences out there and investing in your own team is going to be the most important aspect of continuing to grow a business in today’s world.
I think we should focus our energies on an online presence and television channel and treat our content the way the “bad guys” wanted to treat the game in ready player one maximizing the advertisement output before people wind up having seizures. The name of the game is “MAKE MONEY!” and that’s what our shareholders would want. The truth is subjective and depending on what political party wants to fund our channels we should push their talking points as if any other news source is illegitimate. Maybe even change our name to something patriotic like “One America” or “America News Now”. Give it a few years and we can expand to a national platform where we don’t hire new anchors or anything like that we just charge smaller local networks to air our channel in their town and we make even MORE money. Yes sir give me the reigns to this news outlet and ill take us to the same level as FOX and then we can sell out to them and all retire at a young age.
I believe that The Haveman Chronicle will be the most successful if we put all of our material online. I also believe it is not in our best interest to be in the newspaper or magazine industry, as they are a dying breed. I think taking advertisements in order to pay for more quality journalism is well worth it. But the ads we do accept will be vetted to ensure they are informative and not manipulative to our viewers, so as not to offend them. Our company must have integrity and spine, and not give in to bias. When it comes to anything political, I want our readers to feel that we are not comprised by a political party, and report on facts, and that alone. We must also understand that this is a business, and we must remain profitable to survive. That being said, it does not mean we will compromise our integrity to stay alive. Instead we will always review different avenues of revenue, and be ready to change with the times. We can’t let the company become stagnant due to traditions and nostalgia. The Haveman Chronicle has a bright future if we manage it correctly.
Haveman Chronicle should continue to be successful when changing presidents if the person we hire is honest and willing to change with the times.
Because of the changing times, the internet is mainly the only place people get their news. If I were president, I would probably do most if not all of the articles online. To ensure future success, our media enterprises should look for what people want. Do they want all online news? Do they want only big important stories or interesting but less important stories? Listening to people will be one of our keys to success. It is important that we pay close attention to the advice and opinions of the majority of our readers so we know how to better provide content. This company will go far if we continue to manage honestly and keep priorities.
I think the key to maintaining success in the communication industry are credibility and adaptability. We have to keep the trust of the customers to ensure they will continue to rely on us for accurate information. We also need to be able to adjust to the changes happening around us by providing an online presence for those who prefer to get information that way.
I also subscribe to the “Global Village†idea wherein the world is becoming more interconnected culturally and economically. I believe our company should embrace this idea and expand to appeal to a more widespread base. We will still provide a local service but maybe be able to have a Haverman – Europe, or a Haverman – Asia for online subscribers. This seems like a natural evolution with the way globalization is happening in every other industry it is happening in media as well.
Instead of Haverman Chronicle maybe Haverman Media. I think our future should include a streaming service to include online news, television and movies. Haverman could be the next Apple TV, Hulu, or Netflix plus news.
I would take the company towards the online side of articles and try to make profit from advertising. Nowadays I think the market for physical articles is declining, so I believe the company would benefit greatly if we got ahead of the curve and transitioned to making online articles. To ensure the future success of our various media enterprises I would hire experts in each field to review the programs of each media enterprise, to make changes ensuring these enterprises are set up to reach their full potential.
The Haveman Media Empire should stay true to its calling– it should be a source of quality articles and content that show people we still care about honesty and objectivity. I do not think it is the right move to go public– if we can survive as a private business then we must absolutely not sell out. I think that is essential for retaining our independence. If we are controlled by our shareholders, we will have to forgo some of the qualities that made us great in the first place in order to make more money. This will work in the short term, but eventually, if we became a profit machine, our loyal readers would leave us. When new media mediums off us an opportunity to expand, we need to make sure that still adhere to our standards and principles. Sacrificing our core qualities just to expand into something new is not worth it, and will only lead to disaster.
I would push for the Haverman Media Empire to garner a much larger online presence. This includes a much more user friendly website with advertisement space as well as a heavy social media presence. I would also look to diversify the writers and expand the topics covered by the Haverman. I do believe that the material should still be honest and truthful journalism that focuses on real stories, but it is possible to do that and expand to a broader audience. We would need to look for more funding opportunities as well to support remaining public and the articles remaining free for viewers.
I would attempt to go public while also trying to keep to the routs of the company. While not everyone is family a corporation is kind of a make up family. Since most people spend more time with their coworkers than their own family. The Haveman Chronicle needs to develop with the times while remaining honest and different from the rest. We need to find funding from those who share the same family core values and try to put those first going forward. While money is a necessity it is not the only part that matters. People are not willing to pay for something if it is not honest and reliable.
New Internet Marketers need to know the basics of SEO marketing to be able to compete with accomplished Internet Marketers. Here is a simple but worth reading article that will educate newbies on how they can manage their home-based online businesses with the help of SEO marketing.
I will spread the word about the things about the various enterprises to keep the consistent of the company. And to make sure to know what we really want, and stand for it. And spread about The Haveman Chronicle locally and internationally, and let them know on how we are different from other companies.
I would make the Chronicle a globally recognized name. I would also ensure that we have a sizeable amount of physical media as well as digital media. I would do my best to bring us fully into the modern era and provide plenty of digital media sources. We would also continue to focus on our honest and truthful writing as well as build a larger reader base based on our outstanding service and quality content.
The Haveman Media Empire will continue to be successful after your retirement. When changing presidents it’s important to make sure that the new hire has the qualifications to become the President. I will do my best to change with the times and keep the company going. Because time changes fast, look how far technology has gotten in the last 10 years. With the internet being a major source for news, I’ll make the articles posted online are fact checked. To ensure our future success, our media should be credible and non problematic. To change with the time I’ll listen to our audience and adapt to grow our success. It’s important that we pay close attention to the reactions of our readers so we know how to better provide content. This company will go far with honest values.
To pay respect to the young Dutch immigrant who started the Haveman Chronicle in 1833, I would launch an immigrant hiring initiative, that would look towards hiring those of diverse backgrounds and education. I think it would also be very valuable to diversify this outlet as fast as our media outlets are diversifying, and to stay up to date with new and upcoming technological advances. History has shown the various media enterprises have successfully existed with past presidents, and so rather than re-inventing the wheel I would funnel more funding into what we have already been doing and make it known that rather than trying to change the Haveman Chronicle I would expand on what we are already great at.
When choosing a new president we would need to make sure they understand the values and ethics of the company. It would be critically important to uphold our reputation as a reliable trusted news source. In order to continue the success of the company we would need someone with diversity and social responsibility. This would be essential in expansion and future planning. Having these qualities would ensure our media enterprise continued success in our future en devours.
I would want The Haveman Media Empire to be globally known. In order to keep this company running, I would find someone who is highly qualified and understand the importance that The Haveman Media Empire represents. Background checks should be conducted and someone who can run the business the way it was before and take it to a higher level should be hired for the position. That way they can adapt to the media industry evolving and what the consumers want. With the way technology is constantly advancing, it’s important to change with they way everything else is changing.
I would want to expand The Haveman Media Empire out as far as I can. I would want to keep at the core of Haveman Media, which is to keep people informed but allow them to form their own opinions. Try to keep the news and or topics as neutral as possible as to give the people the ability to think for themselves. With technology now, I believe we can make Haveman Media Group Global, and spread our idea of critical thinking to the world!
I would ensure the Haveman Chronicle continued publishing articles both digitally and locally, so that it would be easy to access for everyone. Furthermore, I would focus on keeping the articles fact based. I wouldn’t be opposed to having an opinion section, however, any articles not in the opinion section would have to be purely factual, with absolutely no rhetoric. If there was to be an opinion section, I would want to make sure that there was a diverse group of writers so that the Haveman Chronicle didn’t get labeled due to a few writers expressing controversial opinions. Personally, I would rather see it remain a fact-based, neutral, news outlet. However, if doing opinion articles would give us a wider audience and increase profit, then I could see potentially moving in that direction.
My biggest priority moving forward would be to ensure that the Haveman Chronicle is accessible on online formats to supplement the physical medium, as should the physical medium’s stability come into question, options would exist to either restructure it or, if necessary, completely switch formats. Once an online presence is established, there would be more options for specializing our content for different target audiences, which would increase our overall scope if successful. Additionally we could benefit from more direct and immediate feedback from the audience, and can even have direct ongoing communication through forums, comments, or other input options. This could be important moving into an increasingly competitive and international media environment in the modern day. The ability to interact with our mass media audience on an individual level (efficiently) is incredibly helpful and should be capitalized on.
I would say the first thing would be to keep the company policies and ethical standards the same regarding how things are run with the various media enterprises. In addition, I would say expansion would be a good idea but only to a size that can be handled without loosing what the media empire stands for. Although this is a business I think once you gain some size you can make the content more about what matters and less about politics or advertisements.
