A west coast city has announced it wants to provide free high-speed Wi-Fi across its entire district because it feels Internet access has become a right, not a privilege, and equal access to the Internet is required for its citizens to be able to compete on a more equal plane. What are your thoughts on their plan? Why would you endorse it or discourage it?

I think internet access everywhere would be a great idea because nowadays you are required to have internet access for many things. To apply for a job most times you have to have internet access because a lot of applications are online. To go to school you have to have internet of course, even if it isn’t an online class. I am aware that it is hard to succeed in today’s society if you never have the internet, even if it’s for a couple minutes a day. I do think it would cause issues for the people who have been paying for wifi because they would expect their money back or see it as unfair. I also think the internet would be slow even if it was high speed because everyone would be using it.
Caitlyn, I agree that having free internet for everyone may cause problems within the community. from higher taxes or business raising prices to pay for the internet to the problem of having a slower internet.
I agree, I think free high-speed interest access to everyone is a great idea. So many things require the internet now. School, jobs, making appointments, deliveries, etc. I think this would greatly help people become more successful in whatever that is to them. People may be able to apply for a job now, or start school, make appointments with their doctors. I do agree with Catilyn, the internet speed would have to be insanely fast if everyone in the district was given access to it.

I think people have the right to be able to access news and other information. Being able to express their opinion and beliefs is a basic human right. The internet offers the largest platform for expressing opinions and accessing information. That being said, the internet can be expensive. So while internet access helps with education, jobs and more, it mainly benefits those who can afford it. So, I can understand why that city has decided to give access to all of its residents, it seems like a great idea.
I agree that it can be expensive and why this would be a good idea. I like how you looked at all sides of this question to develop your opinion!
I endorse this plan; however, my support is not based on a feeling that the Internet has become a right as opposed to privilege. The proposal, as written, sounds as if the sponsor believes providing free Internet access will decrease the power distance that exists within society by magically eliminating income inequality. I support the idea of free high-speed Internet, because I believe in the importance of a well-informed and educated society. Advances in technology have created an environment where the Internet is a necessity, for communication, commerce, and information. I would like to see free internet access offered in the same manner in which free over-the-air television is available, call it Public Access Internet. Any Internet Service Providers who worry about a potential decrease their market share, should consider developing Internet products that can offer more than the basic level of access users on the public network would receive.
The internet is a privilege, not a right. Are cell phones a right? For arguments that internet is a right because it’s required for jobs and various other things, cell phones are as well aren’t they? Are vehicles a right then? We need to be able to get around after all. We need to be able to get to hospitals and to our jobs right? Let me guess, “well we have home phones and buses for that!” Right… we also have libraries and cafes with free internet access. Even McDonalds has free WiFi.
Moving onto the city: The city can do whatever it wants. If it wants to provide free internet to everyone, great. But, it should not be claimed to be a human right. That is laughable. At this rate anything can be claimed a human right if we want it for free. Apparently working and paying for things is a hard concept and way of life.
I see where you are coming from especially with you other examples. I also do not think it is a human right because like you stated, there are other ways to get the internet. Just like this situation talking about everyone having internet for free, what if no cafe’s or restaurants gave the option of free internet ? People would have less opportunities. Just food for thought. Good argument!
While I do not think that it is a human right to have free high-speed WiFi, I do believe that it is essential to have access to the internet in order to excel in today’s world. Therefore, I would endorse this idea to provide free WiFi as many simply do not have the ability or access to obtain WiFi. Nearly everything we do is through the internet now. The majority of my college education has been on my laptop, and so I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult the last four years would have been without constant access to WiFi. Aside from school, there are still so many basic actions that require WiFi. For example, just the other day, I called a salon to schedule an appointment for a haircut. When I made my inquiry, that asked if I had made an appointment through the website. As I had not, I asked to set up an appointment over the phone. I was surprised when the attendant informed me that the only way to schedule an appointment was through their website. What if I was unable to go through the website? It was something so simply as this that made me realize just how online our society has become. However, I do think that there would be follow-up issues with providing free WiFi. I do not think that it would be high-speed as everyone would be using it all at once.
That’s insane to only take appointments by internet! What about the elderly that are unable to use computers? My own mother has difficulties navigating a computer ha ha!
I think having free internet access is a great idea. However, it is unrealistic in states like Alaska or within small towns. No matter how nice having free internet would be, it is not a human right, and someone has to pay for it. Who would pay for this free internet? Would our taxes be higher to pay for it, or would the businesses have to raise prices to pay for the costs they have occurred to give us this resource? These are all things that should be considered when discussing free internet for everyone. So even though having free internet would be nice to have, I do not believe it is a viable option for most communities.
Exactly, it would have to be paid somehow, and our government is stretched thin as it is and taxpayers are already paying high taxes to support various programs.
I do not see at all how having internet access is a right. I would agree that it has become almost a necessity; however, I do not believe it is a right. I don’t think it is fair to make others pay (because like noted above the money has to come from somewhere) for something that is not imperative to have. Also, there is typically internet access in places like public libraries and other random places that offer free wifi.
I read over several responses that address cost and I have to agree that is a real issue. One that I am not qualified to address but in the same way that we agree people must have access to clean water, having internet is becoming/has become an essential part of daily life. If you don’t agree, try to go through an entire 24 hours without it – I did before I posted. If we want people to be responsible, we have to provide the means. Our society is dependent on the internet, its members should have access to it.
This is an interesting topic that I feel torn about. On one hand I do not believe that tax payers dollars are being used responsibly when a government decides to enact a socialist plan to provide everyone with a free service. The success of America is due to capitalism and if we provide this free service we are stepping away from that and giving unsuccessful people a crutch to lean on. This is not the way of the world. There are numerous libraries and public places that provide free wifi.
Now on the other hand, I see this is highly beneficial to underserved youth. It is never a child’s fault who they are raised by. If a child is not provided access to the internet, I am sure they are at a great disadvantage when it comes to school research, etc. This is the only justification for this I can think of. Other than a helpless child, people are responsible for their own success.
Everything you said, YES!
I agree with this. The government so far has not impressed me one bit. Free wifi to all would certainly affect taxes and we know how that goes. Mcdonalds has free wifi, libraries, some grocery stores, etc. No one is going to suffer terribly if wifi isn’t free to all.
I do not think being provided high-speed internet is a “right,” I do think having access to it would be a beneficial move for many people. It seems like more and more people need the internet to accomplish things now. When I first started college, back in 2007, it seemed like I rarely needed the internet and I could easily just use sourcebooks, textbooks, the library, etc. to write papers or do assignments. Now, having a laptop with the internet is basically required for courses. I also have taken a few online courses now that obviously need a connection. With the city providing this access for its citizens would open up an awesome avenue for them. I do, however, worry if they would increase taxes or prices of something else to pay for the high-speed internet availability. That would be a concern worth mentioning and thinking about. I would also be concerned about the number of users using the service at the same time and how it would stand up to that many users at the same time. I think overall it is a nice plan, but there are many implementations that would need to be worked out and thought through. Like I said, I also don’t think it is a right, it is a privilege and it is an accommodation luxury.
I do not think that having high-speed Wi-Fi access across the entire district is a right, however, I do think that having this access would be beneficial to the community. Wi-Fi is a necessity in our world today because most of the things that need to be accomplished are through the Internet. Personally, as a college student, almost all of my work is through my computer and the Internet. I am currently taking four classes online and my two in-person classes that also use websites for work to be submitted. It would also be amazing for those families who can not afford to have Wi-Fi. It would be awesome if the city provided this high-speed Wi-Fi, however, in reality, you would need to take taxes into consideration and how it would hold all up if everyone was using the Internet at once. I believe the tax pay would increase, so in reality, you are still paying for Wi-Fi. How would the Wi-Fi hold up if everyone was on it at once? Would it crash? This is something you would need to take into account, and I think the Wi-Fi would end up burning out and crashing. Overall, it would be a dream to have free high-speed Wi-Fi, however, it is a nice thought that would most likely never happen and/or workout.
Well with everything going on right now I would say it would be perfect due to the need to stay connected. We are coming to the day and age were it should be given to everyone because with the internet you can find out about places that you might not yet be able to visit. Helps others stay connected an up to date to the ever changing world. However it is always have a back up contact list just in case the system did go down have a hard copy.
I’m agreeing with this perspective. This current crisis is not able to be navigated without internet access. We are asking people to stay informed and compliant about things without in person contact….things that are changing hour by hour. The world is a different place from the one when life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were nailed down as rights.
Having free access to the internet would be beneficial I definitely agree but I think it would affect what kind of access is being granted. Is it just standard connection or is it more developed. I think if it was just your basic internet connection then sure, it could be beneficial, but if it is an extremely high speed then I do not think that would be fair to those who are currently subscribing for such connection, or to those who work at these industries. I think jobs would be affected with internet companies, unless they become funded by the state therefore they would still be receiving their profits. I could see how someone could be on either side of this discussion.
I don’t believe having high-speed wifi is a human right. Making it a free service doesn’t seem correct. Someone had to come up with the idea and establish wifi in the world. How will they make any money off their hard work if the world declares it as a human right? Wifi didn’t exist 50 years ago but now we are trying to make it a service that’s free to all? Hmmm.
While today’s world demands some sort of internet connection to get a well-paid job, I believe wifi should be something that people pay for.
Think of it this way: You just invented a highly advanced tool that makes people’s lives easier. It took years of your life to complete but now it’s finished. After making it available for purchase, you impacted a lot of people’s lives in a fairly positive way. But, suddenly, a large majority of people declare your invention as a human right. What are you supposed to think? I would have mixed feelings but this certianly doesn’t seem ok.
I would discourage this plan because having free wifi doesn’t seem like a human right. Hardwork is something many of us are capable of and wifi isn’t water. We can survive without it.
I might have answered this differently before the past few weeks. While access to the internet is becoming more and more essential, it takes a lot to cross that fine line into “rights”. However, with the current state of things, I’m ready to go there. We are asking people to stay in isolation, to stay informed as things change rapidly and comply quickly. I don’t know of another way for that to happen without the internet.
Before these past weeks, it is also true that almost all opportunity from jobs, protection, transportation, shelter has a very strong link with internet access. If we are serious as a society about equal rights, it will necessarily include internet access. WIthout it, individuals and groups with be disadvantaged.
I think their plan is a great idea. While I don’t think it is a human right to have free high-speed Wi-Fi, I do believe that it may encourage people to be more productive in regards to applying and getting a job, applying for a college, or even completing homework assignments in a timely manner. In this day and age the Internet is such an essential part of daily living that I don’t think there are many that could go without it for even just one day. So many individuals use it for things like checking their bank accounts, communicating with family and friends near and far, to catch the latest news, to check the weather, to get directions, for work or school purposes, etc. Making it accessible to everyone in the entire district would definitely be beneficial to everyone, but my next questions would be who would end up paying for it and would it really be considered high speed if the majority of the time the entire district would have access to it?
Eme,
I agree with all of your points, and I also think it is important to try and find. solution for paying for a service such as this. Accessibility to free wi-fi and high speed internet would not only help people get ahead and stay on track with their educations and careers, but I also think that it would be a great starting point to eradicating some more serious socioeconomic issues that are present in our communities today.
I do not think free high speed Wifi is a right anymore than having cable or a cell phone is a right. It is not a basic human right, it is just a modern convenience. Having said that I do think that free high speed Wifi for everyone is a good thing because the internet and all it enables has become a staple in everyday life. I believe that people without the internet will be at a disadvantage to those who have it, so making it available to everyone is important. Many employers ask prospective employees to apply electronically. Many schools (especially now) are conducting classes online. The internet can provide access to research materials, news and other information. In 2020 it is hard for me to even imagine not having the internet. It is such a big part of our everyday life it seems like we use it for everything. If it is available to everyone I would think that would be beneficial for society in general.
The internet is a luxury, not a privilege, and many public spaces already offer free internet. The problem here is that the people who “benefit” from this plan would be paying for the internet anyways through taxes. Furthermore, if the city’s government is the sole provider for internet in the city, then they have the capability to censor people similar to how China censors their country’s internet access. For these reasons, this plan should be shut down.
*right, not privilege
I would encourage this idea, as I truly believe that lack of accessibility to internet really can hinder people and their chances at getting ahead in life. Whether it be something as simple writing up a resume for a job, completing online classes, especially in a time such as this, or further researching job opportunities. Lack of wifi/internet connection in this day and age can be debilitating to someones education, career or plans to achieve greater goals. I know that there are funds available to provide this service to people, without further taxing citizens. As others have mentioned, I do not believe that wi-fi connection is a human right necessarily, however without citizens are placed at a great disadvantage and this is something that metropolitan areas would be wise to consider.
Today, I agree that everyone should have access to free WiFi. One month ago, I probably would disagree. Now that schools are closed and social distancing is being encouraged, I believe everyone should have access to the Internet. Teachers are finding it hard to do distant learning lessons for those who do not have access to WiFi and I think students whose parents cannot afford it should be the ones to suffer academically. There are many resources online that could help these children during this pandemic and having free WiFi would be beneficial. People would also be able to FaceTime, Skype, or any other form of video chatting with their family and friends they cannot see right now to help with their mental state of mind.
Internet access is still a privilege, not a right. Thankfully though, there are numerous places with WiFi already free, like your local public library or McDonald’s. Most disadvantaged people can still satisfy their internet needs at these places. I do think that providing internet access to everyone would be a net benefit to society, but I strongly disagree with this city’s plan to give everyone free WiFi. First off, this plan has many uncertainties. Will the city pay for everyone’s WiFi? Including businesses and homes that already have it? Will the city simply pay an internet service provider to provide the service? Or will they attempt to become their own ISP? If they decide to go with an independent ISP, the city will basically be giving them a local monopoly. They can then ramp up their prices and decrease their service quality with no consequences. If the city tries to provide its own WiFi, then I doubt it will be very good. To conclude, I think the free market does a much better job of providing internet than any government can. When the government interferes, it usually just messes things up for everyone.
I think providing free high-speed Wi-Fi for everyone as a right is a fantastic idea. In todays day and age, without the internet you are definitely behind the curve. Basically, everything requires the internet. Applying for a job is nearly impossible to do without an internet connection. Personally, all jobs I’ve had were found and applied for on the internet. Also applying for school is nearly impossible to do without an internet connection. Once in school, you would not be able to attend without internet. Not having internet can cause people to fall behind, and really hurts their chances for success in life. Having internet for all ensures that we are all connected, and keeps the playing field level.
Free high-speed Wi-Fi for everyone as a right is a “feel good†solution to a problem that does not exist. In today’s world is the internet a key utility of everyday life for many Americans. This fact is not lost to most business owners either. This is why free Wi-Fi is “handed out†in pretty much every store from coffee shops to banks to Big Ray’s. As such, internet access from Wi-Fi is already free for anyone with the means to get online. Getting the government involved will likely raise taxes and debt and produce a product of lesser worth than the current system of mutual courtesy.
So as someone who currently does not have and cannot get internet at home i can certainly say that having high speed internet made available to me, especially during this time, would make competition in today’s market and completing these classes much easier. That being said i don’t think of it as a right much like power and water aren’t rights. ACCESS to water and power are but in our market whoever spends the money to man the pumps and generators should still get a paycheck for their efforts. A reasonable middle ground should be that affordable internet be made available to everyone so that nobody is denied the possibility to compete but not given away for free as it is still a commodity not a right.
I would definitely promote a plan like this. I think that at this point internet access is so imbedded into our everyday lives, including public education and any work connections, that providing internet is a basic necessity. Since the impact of COVID-19, schools are relying on internet to continue educating students. In Alaska, internet providers have offered basic packages for free to homes that do not have the luxury of being able to afford it. With the way that today’s resources are accessed (online), it’s so vital in a democracy to be able to reach information. I think that it could be easily sustained and regulated (internet is already regulated by the FCC). Infrastructure to support this would need to be prioritized to make it beneficial and efficient which could be a fear with the way our governments tend to allocate funds.
I would endorse the city’s plan to provide high-speed Wi-Fi across its entire district. I believe this is a good idea because for many careers a high-speed internet access is a necessity. This is because many careers require degrees, which, along with many jobs, requires wifi. Some people may argue that this would raise taxes, but I believe people would save money overall by not having to pay for wifi directly.
I think the city is right in wanting high speed internet access available to all, and because of this I would endorse it. It is important that everyone has access to the internet. When COVID-19 kicked off and schools closed, students were expected to work at home. To do this they needed the internet. Some families cannot afford the internet. A family who was poor ended up more disadvantaged because now the child also suffered. I believe the cost for internet is far too expensive in America. Here, in Missouri, I pay $55 a month for single use internet. On the East Coast I paid $85 a month for single use internet. In England I paid about $27 dollars a month with no caps. I think internet should be available to all, and I believe internet companies charge far too much for internet access.
I did not read the reply’s before I posted but it seems we have similar views. I know some who pay$45 a month for a hot spot with limited internet and others who pay $170 a month for unlimited. So I understand how much families could save if this plan was made a reality.
I would endorse the city’s plan to provide high-speed internet through out its district. The cost of living today is hard as it is. When everything closed with COVID-19 everyone was forced to work from home. However, this was not taking into account all those people who could not afford internet at home. In fact most people are willing to work longer days in order not to take work home for this reason. If internet was made available to everyone at no cost I believe they would see more investment in the community. Think about it on average one family pays anywhere from $45 to $170 a month on internet. That could be $45 to $170 a month per family put back into the community.

I would absolutely endorse this plan for Wi-Fi among an entire district. At this current time, much more political news happens on media rather than your local news paper. Much like in my post about why I believe newspapers should still be sent out, a lot of this ties back to lower income neighborhoods. These neighborhoods are less likely to have access to reliable news sources, and can turn into a news void of sorts. For our example of a west coast city, let’s use Mendota, CA. With only 35% of this cities population having a high school diploma or higher, and only 49% having access to broadband internet service (U.S. Census Bureau, 2019), this community is a perfect example of one that is left by the wayside when it comes to news accessibility. These neighborhoods are known for being targets for gerrymandering, which greatly affects their ability to vote, have access to healthcare, and proper schooling for their children. Allowing all residents to have access to the Internet would allow a great resurgence of political power in the citizens, and would hopefully aid in stopping power hungry politicians taking advantage of these communities and people.

I would definitely endorse a plan to give free internet. Especially to those that are in school, work from home or anyone that has children. Basically everything is online now and it’s sad but it’s the truth.
When we were kids, before there was DSL, dail-up was so irritating and took so long that most of us didn’t want to deal with it unless we had to. So instead of being online all the time, like kids are today, we were outside playing and being active.
I think if they were to offer free internet there should be stipulations such as time limits, finding out what the internet would be used for, if it would be primarily for children I think an activity log should be implemented to prove they are getting out and doing other things. People today have become really lazy and I will be the first to say that I do the same thing sometimes but we need to do something to change it. Maybe use the activity logs for people to earn longer times online.
I think it’s easy for us not to think twice about clicking on any app on our phone and connecting at our fingertips or logging in to a laptop at home, coffee shop or airplane and having a wireless connection. I think the accessibility should be available to everyone these days at little to no cost. The lack of internet could potentially effect how individuals connect and interact with each other. If I think about it, I would not be able to go to school if we did not have access to the Internet, simply because I do not have the time in my day to drive up to campus and sit in a classroom for hours a day. I think in this day an age it is no longer a luxury item, it is more of a global medium that individuals should be able to connect and it be free/affordable. I don’t think top speed high quality Internet should be required. But, just simply access to vital opportunities, such as job applications, political research, and an email based application should be available on an individual basis.
I would highly encourage this change. As much as I used to enjoy using the internet it has become a toxic place to be. From cyber bullying to doxing (search or publishing somebody’s personal information) I have grown out of my love for being online. I would endorse this plan because we can start to clear out the internet. This is a great plan for all of us to be equal. There’s a dark truth to the word inside of our phones Pivacy is taken away, sex-trafficking has happened, and so much more has happened. This privilege has been taken advantage of and it is better to have good citizens earn their internet privilege. I believe the internet has a lot of good to offer b only for those who don’t use it to hard others or themselves.
I don’t think that internet is a right and implementing free internet across an entire city could be not only difficult to implement, but also costly. While it would be nice to provide everyone with free internet, the costs would have to be covered somehow, and companies such as GCI that would implement this system would have to be compensated. Furthermore, just because there is free internet does not mean everyone has devices that can access it. I believe there is actually a project SpaceX is currently working on, called Starlink, that will improve internet coverage around the globe. I’m not sure how they plan on charging customers for usage of their network, but it goes to show that improving coverage is possible. The biggest issue is the expenses that go along with this and who is going to be paying for it.
I agree that people should have been given access to high-speed internet access. Because we all know that the internet makes everything easier. And access to the internet can be really helpful for everyone wherever they are and whenever. And some of the citizens are not able to access it, so I think it will be really a good idea. It might be a little unfair for most people who are paying their wifi. However, I will endorse this project because I know it can help anyone, especially those students who do not have any access to the internet due to financially problem.
In theory this sounds like a good plan however looking at it in more detail there seem to be some problems. First off to provide this high-speed internet for free is a false statement. This is because they are going to have to raise taxes in order to pay for the high-speed internet and getting the networking set up so it is available to everyone. Also, if the internet is being proved to everyone and everyone is using it the internet will end up being slow. Even if they had 10gig internet with enough people using it the bandwidth would be over run and would eventually slow down. This could intern make people frustrated that they are paying taxes for high speed internet but are not getting high speed. My last concern with something like this is that the city would be the service provider and therefore have domain access and rights, meaning they can restrict what you look. Because of these reasons I think this “free” high-speed internet is a terrible plan and would discourage it. This thought just occurred to me if everyone is sharing a network then that means it is much easier to see what other people are doing. When on a shared network it is much easier to get hacked and for people to steal your data. That is why it’s always a bad idea to do banking and shopping when on public internet like at a café. This would be the same for that public internet.
While I don’t believe the internet is a right, the idea of free high speed internet for everyone is a pretty cool idea. My primary concern is the “free” aspect of it. Internet service is a pretty expensive business to just jump into, especially for a city that likely wouldn’t have the infrastructure or technology in place already. Installing cables, housing servers, as well as just providing routers and modems to people would prove to be both a logistical nightmare and expensive. I suspect an increase in taxes would be the way this internet is paid for and I don’t believe that is truly the best course of action. Maybe the city could try and negotiate with internet providers in the area to lower their service costs for customers in exchange for something else. This would allow the city to potentially lower internet costs in the area without having to spend money to set up their own infrastructure.
I am not sure the internet could be considered a right, but I would approve of this idea so long as a couple issues were addressed. First, the internet would have to be high speed and they would have to section the access appropriately according to how many people would be accessing it to ensure it would be fast enough to actually be a benefit. Second, I think it would be nice to let the city vote on whether to implement it after being presented with a cost analysis and scope of access, depending on if it would be funded out of taxes or not. It could also be implemented on a smaller scale to provide the service to the communities that want or need them, but that would require an interactive process with the city. All in all I think it is a great idea, as it would allow mass access to online job applications, information, news, and a lot of other integral parts of modern life.
Still, prior to you play any hand of poker you need to know the particular rules of that game. Yes, luck performs a part in winning the hand but more frequently than not it is the skill that wins the pot.
