Our newspaper is still profitable, but not by much. Should we stop printing the paper and go online or is there something about printing the paper that is worth keeping? Pick a side and argue your point.

I believe we should go purely online. The nostalgia of reading a physical newspaper is a dying feeling. The hard truth, however, is that business is business. We simply cannot run businesses into the ground because of the desires to hold on to the past. The internet is the present and is certainly the future. It would be more beneficial to research and be on the cutting edge of online print rather than physical print.
Personally, I think we should go mostly, if not completely, online. Printing off a newspaper is not only a waste of paper because people only read them once and throw them away, but also a lot of people are not reading paper copies of newspapers so they just go to waste from not being sold. On that note, maybe there could be a subscriber option so there is only printed versions for people that select that option. I do think there are still people that prefer to read a paper version, but those people are the few. I do agree with Caitlyn on the job portion of it, but at the end of the day if the business is not making much profit, it might need to be reevaluated. I do think it is better to be completely online, but I could see the appeal of reading a paper copy of something just based on my own reading preference. I prefer to read paper copies of books and I prefer the paper textbooks over the electronic versions.
I agree that it is a waste of paper and many people just read once and throw away and that is if they even read them. Although that is sad to me, it is inevitable. I love your idea of the subscriber option where the person could sign up to have it printed for them, I think that is the most reasonable and best option for this ongoing problem. That would still allow some jobs for people as well as allowing people to read the paper copies all while saving paper and making it more convenient for people who prefer to read it online! Great idea!
I believe we should go online because of how many people have smart devices. However, I know a few families who still enjoy hardcopy newspapers and even prefer them over reading on a device. But, with the world the way it is, newspapers would be much more profitable online. We would be saving paper and would be able to reach a lot more people a lot faster then we would with a hard copy newspaper. I bet that with how rapidly technology is advancing, hard copy newspapers are certainly one of those things that will likely just disappear. While I strongly prefer hard copy things over digital ones, I think from a business point of view, digital news is going to sell more because of how instantaneous it is.
I agree with you. I think that the Internet is very convenient and we can find everything there. Not only reading newspapers, we can also do multiple tasks thanks to the development of the internet and technology. Coupon4all codes

I strongly think we should always print newspaper. It might not make as much profit as it did ten years ago but it provides jobs for people as well as being very useful for many. My grandpa has a cell phone and internet but still buys the paper. It does not get delivered to him anymore so he drives to the nearest store and pays for it because it still has value to him. I was born into technology so I find newspaper less valuable but I still have a use for it. When I was in high school I had a current event project every friday where I had to read the newspaper and cut our and article and analyze it. I think that reading it on my phone would have helped me understand the necessity parts of the article but it did not, with newspaper not just being able to scroll through parts of the article helps.
I think we should continue to print the newspaper both ways as long as we are still making a profit. It does sound like we need to review pricing thought. Our own personal preferences and values aside, the market will tell us if there is something about printing that is worth keeping. Unless the staff/management feels nostalgic enough to bankroll that project, we only need to price the printed version and digital versions appropriately including advertising prices and let the consumers decide with their dollars. We can also provide a digital version ad free priced appropriately.
But I would agree that we should be planning for the future and our time of printing on paper is likely “borrowed time”.
While there are some who read the newspaper, usually the elders or in hospitals and such where the internet is limited, I don’t feel that the benefits outway the need. My office still subscribes to the local newspaper, on an average an elder a week may pick up one of the papers and read while waiting, but even that is rare. Everything is digital nowadays and it saves on printing costs and is less trash that is having to be buried (although, I am sure they are biodegradable by now) .
I have old newspaper clippings that I have kept as my children grew up. These consist of birth announcements, sport accomplishments, my husband even has a few from when he was younger, but in the past 10 years, I have not clipped anything to keep. I cannot say that I have picked up a newspaper to look at in over 5 years. If I want to read the news, I pull up my CNN app. Not only is it convenient, but it also has more up to date news that you wouldn’t be able to find in a newspaper until the following day.
But I don’t feel that we should get rid of it solely based on the ‘newer’ generations who prefer technology over in hand material. If they are still in the positive at the end of the day, let them print. Like the Movie Rental Stores, they will too feel the hurt of technology and close their doors. Until then, print on!
This question of whether should keep the printing newspapers is hard for me to explain somehow because I personally don’t buy any newspapers in printed copies. I think hard, nope. I do read newspapers only for the headlines unless it’s something that I am concerned or interested, then I would read the content of that particular topic on the newsstand. News reports in our local newspapers are short and small columns mostly, it wouldn’t take much time to finish it on the spot. I do have a friend like my generation, who orders the prints to deliver to their home daily because her husband is working in educational field. I do read the complete local newspapers at doctor office or at library, such as local events and some updates of local incidents.
The newspapers in Alaska was on the rough road until the name of FNM now. However, I know one thing is good for reading the printed newspapers is that I don’t have to disturb by advertisements or pop ups like on our screen. Further, another good thing about the printed newspapers is that if I wanted to read more for today’s newspapers, I just had to buy one copy of today’s prints and don’t have to pay the whole month subscription fee either I read it daily or not because not all the newspapers are fully accessible for completely free. The last one that I could think of–-if we are in power outages, at least there’s a printed newspaper for us to kill our boredom.
Although I don’t buy printed newspapers, I hope newspapers industries because either online or printing production, the online newspapers company needs almost as many workers that are required to make the printed newspapers before the news are delivered to public readers. I hope the printed newspapers can lasts to the near future but our advanced digital world seems talking over its shares. We never know.
Sorry for some grammars errors because i didn’t double check it. I am not feeling well today, catching a cold.
Thanks.
I wish I could argue for keeping the newspaper, just for nostalgia reasons. But, as much as it pains me to admit, I think printed newspapers should probably be a thing of the past. According to “Newspaper Audience by Age†(2015) the percentage of Americans who read printed papers daily is 50% for ages 65+, but only 17% for ages 25-34. As the population ages, the amount of printed paper purchases will steadily decline. While I understand that not everyone has access to the internet, the number of people who purchase printed papers will not be enough to sustain it from a business standpoint. It may be currently turning a small profit, but based on other newspapers nationwide, that won’t always be the case. Now is a good time to start transitioning to an online-only newspaper. It will be important, however, for our newspaper to educate our readers on things such as paywalls. While someone is willing to pay for a printed newspaper, we may find that they’re unwilling to pay for an online one, because they’re so used to information being free online. It will be up to us to explain online subscriptions and their benefits as well as the cost breakdown in relation to what they were spending on printed papers. We should also put some thought into informing those of our readers who may not have internet access at home about local resources such as a library, where they would be able to access our online paper. While I don’t think a printed newspaper is a sustainable business choice, I will always advocate for the importance of local newspapers. Local newspapers help people be informed about politics in their own area, without those papers, I think we would see even more of a decline in local voter turn out. It’s important for people to stay involved, and local newspapers are an important part of that involvement.

I completely agree with not wanting to see printed newspaper going but knowing it is probably for the best. It is very unfortonute but reading peoples responses I see that it will be better for many reasons. I never thought about the cost online for newspaper, when I was in high school when I would have to do current events on newspaper articles because I would rather spend the small amount of money one time versus a small subscription. I think it would be very important to explain the cost and break it down.
Newspapers should stop being printed because the profit is going to keep on decreasing as this technological generation gets older. When looking at the statistics, mainly the elder generation is still used to having the newspaper while the younger generation is already engulfed in digital formats. The news should be purely digital, such as tv newscasting shows and online articles. Aside from this being more cost-effective, it will be more eco-friendly, which is another huge movement happening in the world today. I find all the papers being printed as wasteful when the articles are online. People who don’t know how to work technology and prefer paper and ink are entitled to their own opinions, but the business is soon going to inevitably crash.

I really think that newspapers should be purely online. Similar to the last discussion we had about people reading less and less. Technology is so far advanced, I think we really need to just embrace it. This would also help the eco-system tremendously. Printing newspapers just seems like a huge waste of paper, and at the end of the day who is really recycling them? I’ve noticed especially in Fairbanks, that we are not that big into recycling like other states are. However, that may just be my opinion, or I’m not that observant.
I like how you brought up recycling as a factor in this discussion. It really does add to the idea of the waste when you consider polluting on top of labor intensive and poor profit margin. Most of these discussion topics are difficult to take a hard stance on because they are so inter-related. Addressing any of them in a positive way really requires a systems type approach.
I would be lying if I said I read the newspaper every day. For about 8 years, my family has not received a newspaper and I could care less if I ever got one. If I ever need to find information from a newspaper, I always go directly online to search for what I am looking for. However, it is nice to have a printed newspaper for those special clippings that you want to keep forever. Some may say a screenshot would be just as equivalent, but there is nothing like a physical copy to hold onto forever. That being said, I believe people in the world today who still read the printed newspaper are usually elders. In reality, technology is taking over the world and here within a couple of years, maybe a decade, I believe that printed newspapers will no longer be a thing and all the news will go online to read.
As a medium, newspapers are profitable. Some papers earn a 10 percent profit after taxes (155). Nearly half, 49 percent, of American adults read physical newsprint papers each week; Print and digital numbers combined bring the U.S. adult weekly readership to 80 percent (163). Based on these numbers, it is clear that our paper needs to be online. However, expanding our reach to capture the online audience should not come at the expense of losing the print readers we have. Why? Online readership is not as profitable as print readership. On average, digital content ad revenue only produces one dollar for every seven dollars of print ad revenue (175).
The aim here needs to be increasing the profitability of our paper by exploiting the current opportunities in newsprint. The advantage print has over digital, is that it is exclusively local. What we print has to have qualitative value to our readers. How can we increase the worth of our paper’s content? In addition to local news and information, opportunity exists in ad sales. Our paper needs to be the Craigslist of print. The classified ads we run should be more in number, more successful, more accessible, and be more pleasing to the eye than our purple peace-sign competitor. In Anchorage a vehicle ad on Craigslist costs $5. Craigslist does not have a physical print version; This should give our paper an advantage in local, but only if we are able to capitalize on what our digital only competitor lacks. We can compete with this. I believe a focus on making our ads look better and helping our customers sell merchandise faster is a good start. What is the average sales time for production on Craigslist? Let’s measure it and beat it.
Keep the print… But make it more profitable. Make it hyper-local.
I believe that newspapers are somewhat dying out, however there is still a place for them. I use them to start fires, wrap presents, and I have even used them to make paper pinatas for Birthday parties. It all comes down to what you can use them for they are not only to read but useful in other day to day activities. Disciplining your kid without hurting them, teach your dog not to do something. Yes the credibility of information from others is declining but it doesn’t mean you have to stop reading these fabricated novels some are funny. When you read the news what can you do with that information most of the things in it now a days has content that you could not even change if you wanted to. It is all just like a commercial, a time waster, if your curious about something go out and find out the truth instead of getting information that doe not tell the whole story. So electronic or paper shouldn’t matter what should matter the most is the content that is what will spike sales. Local things that promote positive thoughts of progress but does not shy away from all the other gruesome facts of life that you can change like the PFD theft. Also how its funny that when the state laws can ignore a federal law with no punishment if they profit from it, but sole individuals that do like marijuana growers that do not pay for licences are now breaking the law that the state made that are breaking federal law so who do you trust has your best interest at heart. If laws are just made to make money and to bully the people they swore to speak for. If news papers Brought back out he questions that everyone is asking about how far is enough on government growth when they are doing it very ineffectively. How one of the main reasons we can not handle any more immigrants is because our infrastructure is out dated and can not handle the mass influx of people. Why do we not have government supplied energy already when we pay so much in taxes. What are the people doing that are supposed to be looking out for there people when they should use all the foreign aid money on rebuilding america to become a Noah ark to say for everybody so we all see the benefits and we grow together like we should be doing. If everyone comes to us for aid who then would fight the other peoples wars for them no one because we would be hoarding all the work force to expand once there empires crumble due to know one to crop there fields and supply the engines. In the end just remember the question what can you do when you get all that information and then see how important it is. If you do not like what you see get involved with it more, do not just keep going off on something you never intend to address. That’s a waste of time that could be used to design the future to be better than what we have now.I think its good to stay up to date in things that pertain to you but if it is that big of a deal then I think it will be bigger than any newspaper it will be on bill boards and everyone will be talking about it till then it seems to all be a veil to deflect the actual problems going on that they seem to never cover.
While I personly believe that we should keep printing newspapers. I do acknowledge that many people use the internet to find ou the news. However, there are people who do not have access to the internet or computers where they would be cut off from the news if we stopped printing. the elderly, some small communities, hospitals, low-income families, all of these people and more are affected if the newspapers were printed any more. I believe that we should continue to have both the printed newspaper and a version online for everyone to have access to the news. As for the profitability of the newspaper, I don’t know how to add in extra income. I know that adds are sold, I don’t know if there is a cost to the internet version of the newspapers either. This could be looked into as well.
It is my opinion that we go completely online. There has been a huge decline in the use of paper newspapers and it is simply not profitable anymore. A few years ago I worked for a newspaper company delivering newspapers. I was hired on as a ‘contractor’ which meant I supplied my own vehicle and had a set of customers which I had to work to retain while trying to bring in additional customers on my own. The reason for this is because for each newspaper we ‘sold’ we were paid .25 cents. Yes, I did the math, it came out to .25 cents a paper.. and when my gas is more than I am bringing in per paper, I was forced to quit.
Which is a problem newspaper companies are facing across the country. They can’t charge too much per paper or else people won’t buy. This means they can’t pay their deliverers too much which means they don’t retain employees and are always struggling to get the papers delivered. It’s a cycle which will only get worse as the decline in customers becomes sharper and sharper. We simply must face that there has been a huge shift in technology based news reading and we must adapt with it or we will go under.
As an added note, shifting to technological delivery of news cuts down on waste and paper use which is great for the environment! Right now, we are seeing an environmental movement seeking to preserve our nature and world. Not only would eliminating our use of paper for news reporting and articles be great in itself for the environment, but the public would approve of it which could bring in more customers. Customers who search for companies which are more aligned with their personal views such as with environmental conservation.
Furthermore, inline with the business aspect of this thought process, having our newspaper articles purely online enables a more broad scale sharing than our paper version does. No one really carries newspapers around anymore and shares them with people out in the public. On social media however, articles can be shared thousands of times a day with far reaches. The use of online news reporting also increases the shelf-life of an article. Again, paper news reports are not carried around and certainly wouldn’t be carried around and shared years later. Yet, on social media where the ease of finding a sharing articles is more prevalent, articles are commonly shared and circulated years later. This keeps our articles moving, keeps the public coming in, and keeps our business going.
Kristina,
I agree with your post and I think you conducted your discussion in a very thorough way. There are too many external costs associated with the manufacturing of newspapers, and it seems that we would be better off in a financial and sustainable way by going online. Great post!
I had to go over this question for quite a while because I can see both the positives and negatives of having newspapers printed. Personally, I absolutely hate reading online. I find it difficult to focus, and it hurts my eyes after a short while. I love physically holding a book to read. However, when it comes to class assignments relating to news articles, it is 100% more convenient to find a news article online. So, I had to look at the practical side of things and how prevalent online reading has become. At this point in time, I feel as though continuing to print newspapers is simply wasting money, resources, and trees. The world is going online, and I believe that the continuation of printing newspapers is no longer worth it. Of course, I do find this to be sad, but at the end of the day, that is the truth.
Hey Sophia,
You bring up some great points here. I would agree that if I am to physically read something for a longer period of time, I would prefer a textbook or physical book rather than a computer/cell phone screen, but doing research is much faster online. I think if newspapers are still making a profit it makes sense for them to keep operating, but if there is a time where they no longer make profit then they should be reconsidered. Nice job

I struggled with this question. I have to have a book in my hands to read. Especially for textbooks for a class, I can’t stare at a screen because I end up with headaches or a migraine. For some reason, I also retain information more from having a book to look over. I also know that printing pages cost money and extra time and resources.
If the newspaper is still profitable from printing, but just barely, I would propose maybe cut back on the number of days the newspaper company prints their paper. I would then move the bulk of the newspaper to online sourcing. So print out for issuing on Fridays and the rest of the week, the newspaper would be available online. This could potentially satisfy both types of clients that want modernity and convenience and others that want the newspaper in their hands.
Eventually, I believe most everything will be online or technology-based because that seems to be where the world wants to be headed. For now, I believe this is what I would try and do with the company.
If people will still read and pay for newspapers, then they should still exist. But if more and more people begin reading online, and physical papers become unprofitable altogether, then they should go out of business. I have personally never bought a physical newspaper, nor do I plan to. Every once in a while I do find a paper to read. I enjoy reading these, but not enough to subscribe to them. I believe that print media still has a lot of value for a lot of people, but if there aren’t enough people reading them to make them profitable, then there is nothing we can do to save them.
Hey Ben,
I agree with you. As long as they are driving a profit, newspapers should remain operating. If there is a time where they are no longer making a profit, then they should be done away with. Nice job
– James
I think the need for printing newspapers has definitely declined over recent years. The move to read the news online through other sources has become very common, and one that has taken a toll on the historic newspapers. I believe that if the printing of newspapers is still profitable, then we should continue to do so. There are so many people moving towards the online sources, but there will always be those people who just genuinely enjoy reading from a newspaper rather than a laptop, cell phone, or other mobile device. I think keeping these newspapers in business also helps with people maintaining jobs, and if they were to suddenly go out of business, they would be stranded trying to find other sources of income. I do think that as the newer, more technological advanced, generations begin to grow in age, the overall idea of physical newspaper will continue to decline and online sources will continue to grow. For now, if they are still providing profit, then newspaper companies should be kept in business.
I do not believe that it is worth still printing the paper. I do believe that there is information worth informing citizens of Fairbanks daily, and a local “newspaper†would still be beneficial, but I think that going digital would be a more profitable and sustainable option. Considering that most people don’t even read it in the first place, I think printing a paper is a waste of time and resources, and such a mass amount of wasted paper is clearly not a sustainable practice. An issue with this however could be accessing past information. For a project last semester, I had to go through archives of papers from cities all around Alaska, and I was able to look through the microfilms in the library to complete my research. However, online accessibility was not easy to obtain, and many older issues of the Alaska newspaper required a fee to view old issues. I’m not sure if this is a regular fee associated with archives, however it made my research more difficult because I was not able to obtain either print or digital copies. However, I still believe that printed newspapers are a waste as well as overall unprofitable.
I personally like having something physically/ traditional to read. Whether that be a book, magazine, or newspaper and hate reading much more than a paragraph on my phone, computer, or tablet. And I think there are still a lot of people that feel this way, however, people in my generation, millennials, don’t want to pay for and are not accustom to paying for magazines or newspapers when we can find that information or the specific article online for free. However, my opinion about this question is that if a newspaper can remain even slightly profitable they should continue to print it as long as they can. This not only creates or keeps jobs, but it is soon going to be an archaic form of communication, so I believe there is value in printing, even when online options are an easy alternative. On the contrary, I also understand how printing the newspaper can be harmful to the environment and quite wasteful in this time in society. in the past, like most things, the newspaper was recycled. Not how we would recycle it today, but in other more useful ways, such as insulation. Many of the buildings in my home town were once insulated with newspapers, some that are now considered ‘historic’ still have it in between the walls and in the rafters.
With the drastic increase in the availability of online news, newspapers are on the way out. It would be in the best interests of the Haveman Chronicle to integrate into this era of news. Newspapers are becoming an unnecessary use of paper, ink, and the power used to print them. The process of printing is almost entirely automated at this time as it is, so job loss would be minimal and could be replaced with jobs managing the website of the Chronicle. Losses from the machinery can be recouped by renting or selling the property that housed them. Of course, the best plan of action would be to phase out the papers rather than stop abruptly. Make it known to the readers about the decision and if it matters enough to them that we continue to provide print options, then we may be able to downsize our printing to the necessary amount.
If newspapers were not to be printed anymore, I probably would not be affected by it. I actually think that they should stop being printed. I very rarely buy the one newspaper that we get here in White Mountain (The Nome Nugget) and only read a few articles when I do. I think it is a waste of paper; I always notice the newspapers that do not get sold sitting on the counter at our store. Many people also have internet and access to online newspapers. My boyfriend is from Ely Minnesota and is always reading The Ely Echo (their local newspaper) online, all the way here in rural Alaska. He also reads other newspapers online and completely agrees with newspapers no longer needing to be printed; “save a tree” he says. He does not have social media and the only time he is looking at his phone is when he is reading the news or looking at sports updates. Those who do not have internet themselves do have resources available to them (public libraries) where they can go to read online news. I would not be surprised if all newspapers quit being printed.
I believe we should stop printing newspapers and go 100% online. Information is more current online, you find out the news as it is happening now. Newspapers can only provide yesterday’s news. Why take the time to actually print out a paper and rush it out for delivery every morning to see what happened yesterday when you can look online and see what is happening today.
I personally only know a few people that get their news from actual newspapers and they are all over 65 years old. Honestly I think it is just a kind of tradition for them to receive the paper everyday, it is not their only source of information. They all have phones, computers, and tablets that they also use to read the news. I think they have just had a paper delivered for so many years it’s just a habit.
It seems like newspapers are a waste of resources and that reason alone should be a good enough reason to stop printing them. We need to do what is better for the environment. I get all my news from the Snapchat “For You†page and that doesn’t require any trees to be used.
While I understand your point of wanting to know today’s news today I also disagree with your point. News papers may provide yesterdays news but the time it takes for them to be written and verified with sources tends to give us more information, than ones opinion of what they think they heard but have the power to post it online without being checked.
While I enjoy reading a printed newspaper, I think they should be phased out as they become economically unviable. In todays technology age there is really no reason to need a printed newspaper, unless you are technologically illiterate. Newspapers are an extremely important source of information for communities big and small. When the newspaper is online, this gives everyone access to breaking news, all without having to wait for the next days printing to read about the news. There is no having to go out to the mailbox, or finding a newsstand. The newspaper can simply be accessed by a computer or smart device. Online newspapers are also great because it means there is unlimited space to work with, which is great for writers, giving them more freedom to write a piece. Online newspapers also usually have a comment section within stories, allowing the public to interact with the story and talk about it online, or give feedback to the writer. Another great thing about online newspapers is that they allow for multiple platforms of media such as; news, photos, videos, polls, and even podcasts. An online newspaper is also a much more sustainable option than a printed newspaper, generating much less waste. All in all, while printed newspapers may hold a nostalgic value to many of us, their future should not be determined by this factor. Printed newspapers should simply be phased out as they become economically unviable, and transitioned fully to online.
Seeing traditional staples of culture being eroded or replaced is sad. One can easily see the newspaper as one such piece of Americana that is falling by the wayside in today’s world of internet-based media platforms. The newspaper in question is profitable, as such it should continue to print. It should do this with the knowledge that online papers are likely the future and be prepared to make the switch when the market deems such a change required. When that change happens, the company should still print out hard copies of its issues to archive. To me this is the value of printed works, they cannot be hacked or modified without the user’s knowledge once printed. Shy of fire or water damage it serves a tangible record of the past in a way that electronic simply are unable to.
As somebody who enjoys the nostalgia and feeling of reading news in print, I would love to keep printing newspapers, however, I am a realist and believe that news is currently best delivered online. Online news sources are able to publish news at an unbelievable pace, which does cause some controversy with editing and reviewing work prior to publishing. My biggest issue with online news publications is the amount of them that are subscription only (even though traditional written newspapers are subscriptions). Another issue I have with the rise of online news sources is the amount of bias and inaccurate reporting that happens because of biases, but also rushing to get information out. I think that if online news sources were better regulated, I’d be completely okay with print newspapers becoming obsolete (as if they’re not already).
We should continue to print paper newspapers because they are making some profit. As long as they are still making profit there is no reason to stop making them especially since people still use them.
In my opinion, if “our†newspaper is still being profitable, but not by much, I would unquestionably advise that we stop production and go entirely online. Today, with technology being so advanced there is no reason not to. Going digital has many benefits. We would not only save paper and the environment, but customers would also have the ability to easily search for specific articles or information, the capability of effortlessly sharing something of interest with family or friends, and most importantly consumers would be able to access our newspaper digitally from no matter where they are.
I personally can’t remember the last time that I picked up a newspaper. If I do read the news it’s typically on my phone via Apple News, on another app, or on the Internet. There are certain things that I prefer to read a hard copy of, such as a textbook, magazine, or particular documents, but due to us being in the digital age it’s so much easier to read or inquire about something online.
While in my last few posts I spoke very highly of the “experience” one gets while going to a bookstore, or even on a short trip to rent a movie, one could argue reading the newspaper doesn’t come with such an experience. I could understand how sitting down with your cup of coffee and opening up a newspaper can be a genuinely comforting or relaxing experience for some, although it could be argued that comfort is most commonly experienced by the older generation. It is a very easy argument to say, “ya know what, let’s stop wasting paper, stop printing newspapers when everything you need to know is at the tip of your fingers.” While that may be easy, it’s incredibly shortsighted. This argument has the basis that everyone owns a computer, smart phone, or TV. It also has the basis that easy to rely on articles and news are easy to come by. They are not. Our searches on Google are riddled with ads, news that has one goal and one goal only: to grab the reader, bias news sources, far leaning right or left news outlets, as well as fear mongering tactics. While I am not arguing a newspaper has more reliable information that an Internet based news outlet, or something you see on your TV, I am saying it is more reliable than some of the most popular places people go to get their information. With this being said, it is also important to view the privilege of your statements before you say them aloud. Stopping the production of newspapers can leave some people with very little to no access to the news. While many Americans have the Internet easily accessible, some do not. “-low-income, non-Asian minority, and rural households were much less likely to be connected [to the internet] than their more affluent, urban, and white or Asian American counterparts.†(Exploring the Digital Nation: America’s Emerging Online Experience, 2013.) While this information does come from a source in 2013, I think it would be reckless to disregard an accredited source such as this even if it is older information. While many may have readily available access to the Internet or to a computer, let us not forget many do not.

I find this a difficult question because there is one part of me that says that it should all go online to save money, time, resources. Yet there is another part that thinks there should be some news that is printed and permitted. To engage having a complete, accurate, and correct piece done. Because anything can be changed on a website relative easy but once it is out there in print there is no changing it. But that could be a plus too to be able to quickly change a mistake can be a plus as well but I could see this used as a crutch used to release stories before they are ready. This is doing an injustice to there credibility which could be argued that it is a disincentive of itself that could keep most people from running stories to early as well. But I kinda already seeing it happening already with stories online line just being to the headline will little to nothing else. While all those things are dangerous I only see us going more and more online for the reason I mentioned above time and money being the most important it fast and cheaper to move online so I see us moving in that direction.
If the company is just looking for a profit, then yes discontinue the original paper method. However, if this is the option, they choose they need to be prepared to lose those customers who only purchase the original paper. I personally prefer the original paper method for many reasons but let us go with the fact it is the original method.
News paperers have been around for centuries and have been able to continue by providing information about events to its consumers. While the internet version can do the same thing and having a farther reach it does not give the most important piece needed. Which is the contact from flipping each paper to read about what is going on in the community and in the world. The New York Sun is a perfect example of a paper stating what is going on in the community by reporting on police reports and crime stories. Today we need more reliable sources in hand and not on a screen. The screen offers its self-up to being hacked, but to hack a printed newspaper is far less likely. We need a newspaper today that will benefit our community by providing facts in a newspaper like the New York Sun did for its community back in the 1800’s.
Making newspapers only accessible online would save companies countless amounts of money and resources. But by doing this they would most likely lose a decent amount of their older audience and make it more difficult for profit. Most of the people that read the physical newspaper are the older generation, my grandmother, for example, gets a morning paper every morning so that she has something to read while she drinks her coffee. That is the only other resource that she gets her daily news from beside the news channel she watches every evening at 7 pm before she goes to bed.
Maintaining the physical newspaper also provides societies with somewhat reliable news sources that can then become historical artifacts. It is easier to change what is said in a news article online, but when the newspaper has been printed and distributed to audiences, there is no way that you can completely alter anything to do with that article.
There is also a certain level of comfortability that comes with holding a physical newspaper in your hands, you don’t feel like you have to fact check the news in front of you because of the way that it was formatted and presented to you. It has to go through more people before being published when printed, whereas when it is virtual fewer people are looking at the piece and therefore it makes more room for mistakes in the news to slip by.
I can understand why people enjoy online news more, but I side with the idea that we should continue to stick with printing newspapers, even if we don’t progress further from this point in the printing world. Online news articles feel more commercialized, whereas a printed version feels like it’s meant to connect with individuals on a more personal level. Therefore allowing me as a reader to connect more personally as well.
Again, with this question, I believe it is different in different countries. In England, newspapers are available everywhere to buy. Plus, they are mainly under $1. Additionally, newspapers are needed for our fish and chips! And, recycling is available everywhere so the newspapers can be recycled for free (the trash men pick it up for you at your house). I used to buy and read newspapers in England, even if it was just on a Sunday. Here, I don’t even recall seeing a newspaper available to buy. I saw some on the East Coast but I have not noticed any in Missouri, nor Alaska. I do tend to not to pay much attention at times though. If there were newspapers, they weren’t placed in a prime position. I do think newspapers should be printed, but profit should come first. If profit isn’t prioritized, then the newspaper will die anyway. In America, I read the news online, but once I go back home, I will start buying newspapers again. In America, even if I saw a newspaper, I wouldn’t buy it because of recycling. There is no recycling where I live unless I haul everything to the military base. I think too many recyclable items are just thrown away in the trash because the states haven’t bothered to develop recycling facilities. So overall, In Europe, yes – keep printing, and in America, go online.
The time to change to an all-digital format is fast approaching, but it is not here yet. By looking at the data of people that read the paper version only, it is clear that there are still many older people that still want or need the print version. I have personally been around many seniors that have trouble with technology that most people think of easy to use. This is due to the rapid evolution of technology in the past 30 years and there not being a need in their life to keep up with it. So it is important for them that there are absolutely no technical issues that you can have with a physical copy of the paper. Given that this group of people is getting smaller, there will be a time in the next 5 to 10 years when the financial cost of supplying a physical copy will outweigh the income that these subscribers provide. This is something that should be planned out more than a year and we should be engaging with the readers about this eventual change. I feel that with discussion with the readers about the future of the print edition of the paper will be essential in a successful transition when the time comes.
This is a tough question since we all know that there are some people out there who are still waiting for their newspaper to come every morning and they even buy it if they don’t receive one. I think it is not really profitable as of now since they can read news through online, but at the same time not everyone have the access to internet. So, I think even though printing newspaper is not really profitable these days, they should still print it especially for those elders who would rather read news in the newspaper rather than through online.
I agree. The older generations do not use their phones the same way the younger generations do. Also, many hospitals and medical facilities are filled with people that are not allowed to use cell phones in the buildings because it disrupts their signals and equipment. In addition to them, there are still many people who would prefer to have a newspaper in hand.
Being able to exercise our First Amendment rights by printing original ideas onto paper, and distribute them to the masses, is largely taken for grated in these technological, dominant times.
We’ve already seen internet search browsers censor information they feel is necessary, and while we may not think that would affect the pieces we publish, there may come a time in the future where our online articles are being blocked or throttled for the content we’ve created. If we want to ensure our writing get directly to the people, paper is the way to go.
I believe there is much to be lost if we discontinue printing our newspaper. There are many people who prefer to have a hard copy of their news and if it is still profitable, there’s no reason to scrap it all together to switch to a 100% online platform.
The newspaper industry is, unfortunately, a dying industry, and that is something I believe that we can all agree on. With the increasing use of technology in our world today, there are few people that actually still look to newspapers, and fewer still read through every part a newspaper contains. With information at our fingertips, the sharing of news and information online is increasingly popular as it has proven to be a much more efficient method. There is also the environmental side to newspapers, when we consider the materials and the waste that come from newspapers, which are intended for a single use, rather than a technological device which serve many purposes.
I think that the newspaper should be moved solely online. As timeless as the newspaper has been thought of, people are not subscribing as much because of the ease of technology. More individuals would prefer to get their news online, because they can see multiple news sources within a few seconds with a simple web search. There are multiple avenues that the newspaper could be taken, such as a website or an app.
Newspapers have been around for a while and has created great memories and sentimental meanings to some. However, with the advancements in technology and the favoritism among easily accessible things, eliminating printed newspaper is inevitable. One can argue that printed newspaper servers a small population like older individuals who aren’t familiar with how most technology works so the main source of news and information would come from newspapers that come to their front door. It’s difficult for me to pick a side due to both having their benefits. But if I were to choose, I’d say that going strictly online rather than printing newspapers is the best option and will eventually happen. Newspapers already have electronic version in which you can access from out of state or even anywhere in the world. Printing newspapers also create a very high environmental burden and if eliminated, not only will trees be saved but profit can occur that overcome the price that printing costs.
This is a difficult one. I think we first need to figure out our target market. Who is reading the paper the most? There is something to be said about the older generation having a hard time letting go of the physical paper itself. If the majority of our readers/customers are coming from that generation then we are taking a major risk of losing even more profit by transitioning to the electronic version. If the majority of our readers are younger folks it might be time to take the step to the electronic version. This version has the ability to reach more people in real time and can be updated as needed. If we went to an e-version of the paper we could submit different content with articles such as video/pictures allowing for more interactivity.
I would argue that we should keep newspaper printing. The reason why we should continue to print newspapers is that not everyone in the world is technologically smart and might have some issues simply trying to read the paper. Another reason we should continue printing the paper is for people that want to keep up with current events but does not have the technology to do so. Not everyone in the United States has the same technology, some people have it better than others which would be unfair to stop printing it because most people have the technology to look things up.
I think when get rid of tangible efforts, there’s a decreased sense of empathy. I understand we are moving into a tech-forward society and it’s much easier and faster to push a button than to go get the paper or find the a newspaper. There are people who rely on that type of media and hope it gets pressed and delivered to them to keep up. Even for the people who understand and maybe want to transition, what about for people who don’t know how to properly utilize resources around them, or realizing that there may be a lack of knowledge or education to help these resources get to people who may need it the most. Even when given the knowledge on important resources like the library, there might be a loss of tradition and sense of culture that a group of people may invest their time into. You’ll lose followership moving into going online and I feel like the type of time reading a newspaper will not be the same amount of time allotted to a screen.
I spoke with some of my co-workers about this discussion because I don’t keep up with the news. So it doesn’t really make a difference to me if the newspaper is printed or not. One did bring up a good point. He asked me a question, “If you sit with a magazine, are you just going to read one article or are you going to flip through the whole thing?â€
I thought about it for a second and realized I would most likely flip through the whole thing even if just one article catches my eye. The newspaper is basically the same thing. Most people go through the whole thing, which includes looking at all the ads.
Sure who can find everything from the newspaper online now but it doesn’t have the layout a printed paper does and you can miss many things.
I think continuing to print the paper also contributes to keeping records.
This week is tough! When I think of newspapers, I think of the elderly who still use newspaper as a news source. But I do believe it’s a waste of paper then gets thrown every day. While working for a gym I would see people take turns viewing the paper. But while working for a gas station I saw paper being thrown away. I only bought the newspaper if there were coupons but even then, coupons are now online. Since I have to choose, I would get rid of the newspapers and go straight to online. We could find a way for newspaper lovers to either transition to online or find a subscription for them to still receive it. Considering global warming, I believe that this is a great solution to reduce the amount of paper waste.
I was shocked to find out from our reading this week that newspapers are profitable, better than some businesses. Even that fact could not help me make a solid decision. After much thought, I knew that I had to decide to move away from printing on newspapers to publishing online. I did consider the older generation that still reads the paper. First, going electronic will be environmentally friendly. Before COVID-19, many newspapers were not recycled; they were thrown away. Going electronic would eliminate this issue. Second, the cost to operate print newspapers would be reduced tremendously. From a business perspective, eliminating this expense would allow monies to be allocated to other costs. Lastly, people want to be able to have access to everything at their fingertips. Having that capability satisfies the instant gratification in every person. In my opinion, all reading materials are going to be available only on electronic devices in the future; it is only a matter of time before it happens.
I believe that print is dying, printing newspapers in our day and age of online everything is a waste of paper and also following the archaic mindset. To survive and thrive in our market, news companies must take to the online space to keep up with the demand as people are quite literally carrying around the entire internet in our pockets, if newspaper companies fail to adapt they will be left behind and eventually fail as a business. Not to mention people are starting to become more conscious about the environment and using so much paper to print so many thousands of editions of papers to not even be purchased is a major and unjustifiable waste of our natural resources.
I believe that the best business move would be to begin the transition from a physical paper to a digital one while still printing the physical edition in a smaller batch. While physical copies of newspapers are dying, there is still a market for them. I for one don’t normally stay glued to my phone or tablet while I’m out. Usually if there is a magazine or paper around I will read that instead. Looking at screens all day hurts my eyes and I’m sure many others have that same problem. Having something physical to read instead of digital is really convenient so that I can give my eyes a break. So while the widespread use of a physical paper is disappearing, there is still a small market available.
I think that we should continue to print the newspaper. It’s tradition, it’s nostalgia, and it’s important to hold paper in your hands and read it. It’s developmentally more important and better for you physically than reading online. Having taken that stance I do also believe that they should make an amazing online news site, and have that available as they do for purchase. The printed newspaper should still be available for subscription services, and in stores who are also willing to pay before hand. I think reading physical newspapers is just as important as learning cursive. It’s part of our history and part of the foundation our country has been built upon. It’s imperative to keep it alive. I make my daughter read the physical newspaper, and while I do read some articles online when I’m on I don’t seek out the news online. While I support e-commerce and I’m a fan of online articles, and ebooks. I think it’s important to maintain a balance since there’s so much research available on the negative effects of screen time and blue light.
The profits of a newspaper are not simply defined by the medium of delivery. This question is a bit narrow to be able to answer completely.
1) If the paper is currently profitable in print, then it must be doing something correctly.
2) If the percentage of profitability is less than desired then the books should be evaluated for areas of improvement in the profit margins.
3) While I can imagine that printing paper is “expensive†when it comes to the expense area of the books, I am sure there are other line items that are just as big if not bigger than the printing press itself. IT/servers/software development is not free. Staff expenditures, subscriptions to AP news and other sources of items that are published along with the defining local information are among many of the line items that should be found in the books.
4) While readers of both print and electronic forms of newspapers have overlapping goals, there are definitely differences in the reasons that people read each.
5) The purchasing market for electronic papers seems much more unstable. The electronic presence of a paper is only as good as its most recent release of relevant information to the reader.
6) The market for the printed paper doesn’t just rely on the news articles itself to draw its buyers, but also on the tangible product it produces. Some purchasers need the ability to write in the paper, or to look at everything printed on a page at once, or to be able to clip out an article/item and save that for a different time in a physical form.
In short, nostalgia isn’t the only consideration when determining if a business should be shifting its product or its mode of delivery. A company starts with profit and determines the plan of action from the evaluation of the books and works from there.
Although printing the news is tradition and has always been around, in this day and age not very many people will pick up a newspaper and read when everything easily accessible online. In order for these newspaper companies to continue making profit they must turn over to online resource and create profit from there. Especially if they take the time to create an amazing website it would bring in more revenue than just printing it.
Whether its print or online, newspaper relies heavily on ad revenue. The only reason that we are useful to ad companies is that people read the news. To keep up profit The Haveman Chronicle will need to maintain readership and the best way to maintain readership is to keep a good balance of producing exciting content while upholding our credibility. If we can do this then there won’t be any need to fall back onto online news. Especially since online news is often, in the eyes of the public, seen as less credible. Considering that this company was built on credibility the transition to online news would be the death of us.
I personally think we should keep printing newspaper because there are still a lot of people who prefer to read an actual newspaper versus to having to read it online. Not everybody is tech savvy like the elder and majority of them are used to having the physical paper. I think it’s nice to see someone sitting at a park bench reading the newspaper or at the airport or coffee shop. They’re not on their phone or tablet. Reading the actual paper I feel like keeps you more focus than reading the news on any devices because it’s so easy to get sidetrack. I for one like the newspaper because everything is right there, plus the little cartoon they have is pretty funny and cute. Staring at my phone or tablet all day hurts my eyes and gives me headache.
If the business is only slightly profitable I think it would be best to go online and stop printing paper. While I think it would be nice to continue printing the paper for those who aren’t as technically inclined, ultimately it’s going to come down to costs. I might prefer having something physical in front of me to read, but the convenience and low costs associated with going digital outweigh the benefits in this case. Furthermore, I’ve noticed that some of my not so tech savvy relatives have been getting the hang of digital media. So, ultimately I think going digital would be the best option in this scenario.
I believe that as long as the news paper is profitable, we should continue to print them. This is because some people do not like using the internet to get their news and prefer to read it in the newspaper. We cannot assume that everyone wants to read the news on their computers or phones. If the newspaper went completely online this would take away a method of distributing the news to people who may not want to use the internet to read the news. If these people exist, newspapers should be continued to be printed. But I also think it would be a wise decision to looking into moving online as well. This way you can reach those who want to get their news on there phone, tablets or computers and you reach those want to read a newspaper. If the newspaper becomes unprofitable then it might be time to cut it and move fully online but until that point, there is no need to stop producing newspapers.
Our newspaper is still profitable, but not by much. Should we stop printing the paper and go online or is there something about printing the paper that is worth keeping? Pick a side and argue your point.
I think it is not worth printing the newspaper, if the business is not profitable and there are better ways for news to spread. There are a few points you can bring up when arguing with whether or not do do away with print newspapers. One would be saving paper and therefore trees, saving the gas it takes to distribute them, saving the ink it takes to make them, etc.
I think that moving online is smart because, in this day and age, newspapers in print form have become obsolete (except for the comedy section). Why spend time and energy on a medium that is no longer fully relevant to the time we are in?
I believe that moving newspapers online is the correct route to go as our culture continues to move to an online media source. People get most of their news from social media and as a newspaper I would follow suit.
To elaborate a bit more, when you look at how pretty much everything can and is moving towards moving online, especially with covid-19, the best route in which to continue in business is through online media sources. From music to money to college classes, traditional methods are being replaced with online methods, so it only makes sense to follow that direction with the newspaper.
I think that partially transitioning to an online format would be profitable, as digital formats are currently the more successful, but I would let the market after that partial convergence decide whether or not to continue physically printing. If it is profitable, and the community still has demand, then I see no reason to stop. I still see newspapers used often by a lot of families and also by gardeners, landscapers, painters, etc… and so do feel like a demand is still possible. That said going online has a vastly superior audience scope, the possibility of endless specialization and addressing a fragmented audience, and undeniably better profit margins, so I think it would absolutely be a mistake not to at least run an online format of the paper or at most market original online content as well. The most successful newspapers have a unique opportunity to benefit from interaction between physical and online forms, instead of choosing one or the other.
Also forgot to mention, online mediums have the benefit of immediate feedback which is something newspapers in particular suffer from the absence of.
